ANNA BACHS

PhD student (co-supervisor: Dr. Ian Mabbett)

I started my PhD in Chemistry at Swansea University in January 2021 under the supervision of Dr. Francisco Martin-Martinez, and I am co-supervised by Dr. Ian Mabbett. Previously, I studied in Catalonia, where I am from. I obtained my BSc in Chemistry from Universitat Rovira I Virgili in Tarragona (Spain) and my MSc in Chemical Engineering from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona (Spain). Nothing would make me happier than saying that I also got my BSc in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona – sadly, I have not finished it yet. But as hope is the last thing to lose, hopefully, I will be able to, someday.

Initially, my main interests in science were limited to biomedical applications and drug delivery. However, life is full of surprises and I have discovered a whole new world in this project, which consists in modelling and developing biobased materials from biomass with a wide range of possible applications. Who would have thought a lab rat like me would end up doing computational chemistry? Having the opportunity to learn new things every day is amazing!

As much as I love chemistry and science, I cannot focus without music! So you will always find me with the headphones on in the office. And this reminds me I really should start playing bass again… Please don’t judge me for bringing my bass guitar all the way from Barcelona to Swansea and not having taken it from its case since I got here.
