Biomass and biobased materials

The ability to valorise waste is a cornerstone of circular economy. At MMLab we work to identify new routes for biomass waste valorisation, and urban waste mining. We unlock new applications for biomass materials (e.g., nanocellulose-based superhydrophobic coatings, lignin-based applications, chitin-derived materials), and we design biobased functional materials, e.g., polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), designer biochar, bio-oils. By coupling modelling and simulations to hydrothermal processing (HTP) we design and develop fit-for-purpose biobased materials with applications in energy harvesting and storage, sustainable infrastructure, and precision agriculture, among others.
