Ecology and economy share the Greek root “ecos”, derived from “oikos”, meaning house or household. A circular economy is a way to preserve our home. Nature is circular. It creates materials for deconstruction as well as performance. At MMLab, we investigate the limits of material design to mimic Nature’s circularity as well as functionality. We build upon our research experience with Nature-inspired materials, e.g., materials that mimic the chemistry of mussels threads, the bio-photonics of cephalopods like octopus or cuttlefish, the mechanical performance of nacre, the mechanical adaptability of Nereis Virens (a sand worm) to explore the next step: Nature-inspired circular materials.
