Self-healing infrastructure

Resilient infrastructure is essential to progress and sustainable development. It connects communities, and it supports their daily day activities. At MMLab, we investigate the design of self-healing asphalt mixtures from biomass waste. Waste materials that entail an environmental problem are turned into a solution to the lack of road infrastructure in developing countries. We incorporate social inquiry, and historical analysis into the research process, to advocate for social-driven innovation. Our research combines multiscale modelling and simulations of complex biocrude oils and bitumen with the hydrothermal processing (HTP) of biomass waste. We design, model, and simulate self-healing bio-asphalt.
